Major Wine Producer Toasts New Holland Machinery and Support

Marlborough winery Wither Hills has a strong relationship with its local New Holland dealer, which provides top quality tractors and grape harvesters as well as the service and backup needed to keep them running.

Wither Hills has been running New Holland tractors and Braud grape harvesters for many years. The machinery is a critical part of its vineyard operations, as is its link with Norwood Farm Machinery Centre, Marlborough-Tasman in Blenheim.

The premium quality fruit that Wither Hills grows to produce its wines come from its vineyards, which are located throughout the Marlborough region. Regional vineyard manager Craig Leov has been working for Wither Hills for 14 years and says the company was running New Holland tractors and Braud grape harvesters when he arrived. There are currently 12 New Holland tractors in its fleet. They range from older TN models to current T4 models, including a T4040 and T4050.

"New Holland tractors suit our purposes and they are affordable,” Craig says. "We use them for all our vineyard operations, which includes towing vine sprayers, mowing, trimming, plucking and post driving.”

Craig is involved in the decision-making on every piece of machinery purchased for the vineyards and says he has remained loyal to New Holland tractors because they provide a good service. "We have stuck with them all along because we don’t want a rainbow fleet, and we have received good deals on them in the past.”

The New Holland tractors have met all of Craig’s expectations and consistently deliver a high performance for his vineyard team. "We like the mid mounts on the newer models because you can run two pieces of equipment, front and back, a lot better than the old ones used to without the mid mounts,” he says.

Wither Hills now runs three Braud 9060L grape harvesters, after building the fleet up from one when Craig was first employed there. He says they pick the fruit well, do a great job and are reliable and easy to maintain. Braud harvesters can be set up to work in different vineyards quickly and efficiently.

Their SDC shaking system softly shakes and detaches the grapes, while the Noria basket system protects the vines and transfers the fruit quickly and without losses. These proven Braud systems are now matched to a larger conveyor system, high-performance cleaning fans and a new de-stemmer system.

Craig says the Marlborough-Tasman branch provides Wither Hills with great support for the tractors and harvesters. He deals with salesman Trent Lindsay, who provides competitive pricing and organises good service and backup. Their positive working relationship has been a big plus to the Wither Hills team.

The branch provides a complete servicing and spare parts operation from its Blenheim facility, which includes genuine parts and lubricants. Craig chooses genuine parts and lubricants for his machinery in order to keep them in the best operating condition.

"As our machinery comes up for servicing we let Norwood Farm Machinery know and they come and service them here on site,” Craig says. "They have very good technicians and do very good servicing.”

The Marlborough-Tasman branch provides a quick response at any time whenever Craig and his vineyard team require. The company offers a complete 24-hour; seven-day-a-week after-sales service and parts package that has helped Wither Hills maintain its productivity during the busiest times of the year. Its technicians are on site on as quickly as possible after a breakdown to ensure as little downtime as possible.

"Generally, they have spare parts on hand and we don’t usually have to wait too long to get them,” Craig says. "Nine times out of 10 we can be back up and running in the same day if we have a breakdown or any problem.”
